The Los Angeles Lakers will honor their NBA In-Season Tournament championship banner.
"The Lakers will raise a unique championship banner prior to their Dec. 19 home game against the New York Knicks," the team said in an official statement on Wednesday.
According to the Lakers, the in-season tournament championship banner will be different from previous banners. It will be a different color and shape than the one that hangs in the existing Crypto.com Arena, and it will also make room for additional ones if the team wins the tournament in the future.
The decision comes after The Messenger's Arashi Markazi reported over the past 10 days that the Lakers had no plans to add an in-season tournament championship banner, as they have only hung banners honoring championships and Hall of Fame retirees.
The Lakers are the NBA's most decorated franchise, having won 17 championships, tied with the Boston Celtics. While winning the In-Season Tournament is not more valuable than the Lakers' ultimate goal of winning their 18th championship this season, they are adding the banner to commemorate and remind us of their first championship. It will be interesting to see what their planned in-season tournament banner will look like.
Meanwhile, the Lakers posted a photo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis hoisting the In-Season Tournament trophy high above their heads to recognize their contributions.
The duo were also named to the All-Tournament team, which was announced by the NBA on Sunday, alongside Yannis Atetokounmpo, Tyreese Halliburton and Kevin Durant.
